IDF soldier moderately wounded by Gazan sniper

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was moderately wounded late Tuesday when shot by a Palestinian sniper in the central Gaza Strip.

Earlier Tuesday evening, the Israel Air Force attacked two Palestinian militants as they rode a motorcycle through the northern Gaza Strip on, killing one and wounding the other, Hamas police officials said.

They identified the casualties from the missile attack in Jabalya refugee camp as members of Islamic Jihad, one of several Palestinian militant factions.

The dead man was named as Mohammed Ghausain, Islamic Jihad's commander in northern Gaza. He was hit while riding his motorcycle in the Jabalya refugee camp, Palestinians said.

The IDF confirmed that its troops had carried out the air strike.

Israel frequently targets Gaza militants in airstrikes, trying to stop daily rocket fire from Gaza at southern Israel.

Earlier Tuesday, Hamas radio reported that militants from the Islamic group had detonated bombs next to several IDF armored vehicles operating in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF troops were operating out of Dir el-Balah, in southern Gaza. The army said that no one was hurt in the explosions.

IDF troops earlier Tuesday hit a Qassam rocket squad in the central Gaza Strip.

Also Tuesday, Palestinian militants fired anti tank rockets and mortar shells at the soldiers. None of the troops were hurt in the incident.

Meanwhile, an Israel Air Force aircraft hit a vehicle in a missile strike in northern Gaza late Monday, killing a person getting out of the car, witnesses and health officials said.

The witnesses said the man was apparently the target of the IAF strike. He was identified as Ibrahim Abu Olba, 42, from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Dr. Moaiya Hassanain of the Palestinian Health Ministry said he died of his wounds in a Gaza hospital. Three bystanders were also hurt, he said.

The DFLP has claimed responsibility for some of the recent rocket attacks on Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that it carried out the strike targeting Abu Olba, who it said had been involved in a string of attacks against Israel and was planning more.

Israel often targets suspected militants with airstrikes, often targeting rocket squads or their commanders.

The vehicle was hit in the town of Beit Lahiya near the Israel-Gaza border.
