Starwood mulling hotels in Tel Aviv, J'lem
Tags: Israel, Tourism

Starwood Hotels, which owns the Sheraton and Luxury Collection hotel brands, is mulling over six projects in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for its high-end brands, including The Luxury Collection, and W. A delegation of five senior Starwood managers recently traveled to Israel to review the possibilities.

According to sources in the hospitality sector, of late there have been signs of unprecedented interest by international entities seeking hotel projects in Israel. Among other things, Starwood has shown an interest in managing the Palace Hotel in Jerusalem, won in the end by the Hilton Hotels Corporation, which will operate it under the Waldorf Astoria brand.

According to Starwood Hotels' manager in Israel, Haim Outmezgin, demand is highest for Jerusalem and Tel Aviv sites. In Tel Aviv, the inclination is toward a boutique hotel not on the beachfront, which is already saturated with hotels.

A court decision is expected in coming days in a claim filed by Starwood and its subsidiary, Sheraton International, against Shaya Boymelgreen's Azorim. The claim revolves around a management agreement signed between the firms for management of Sheraton Hotels by Starwood. Outmezgin says the issue is limited to the legal procedure, and the chain does not intend to take the Sheraton brand out of Israel. (Irit Rosenblum)
