Soccer / Beitar 3-1 win puts Herzliya in serious peril of relegation
By Moshe Boker

Maccabi Herzliya lost to Beitar Jerusalem yesterday in the rematch of an encounter that was called off six minutes before the game was supposed to end because Beitar supporters burst onto the pitch to celebrate the club's anticipated victory.

Beitar has since gone on to win the Premier League title, rendering last night's match of little importance to it. But for Herzliya, the encounter was crucial, as the team is fighting a battle against relegation.

In the first half, Beitar romped over its visitors. By the 13th minute, it had taken a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals by Junior Viza and Aviram Baruchyan, who was the most valuable player of night.

Herzliya tried to come back in the second half, making it 2-1 and briefly giving hope to its players and officials. But Beitar scored a third goal in the 90th minute when Gal Alberman caught Herzliya's young goalkeeper, Itamar Nitzan, far from his goal, dribbled past him and put the ball in the back of the net. The game ended 3-1 Beitar.

Following its defeat, Herzliya will have to win its last two matches, while hoping its rivals in the relegation battle lose or draw, if it is to stay in the top tier.
