Soccer/Premier LeagueHeaven can wait for Beitar J'lem
By Haaretz Sports Staff

Hapoel Tel Aviv rained on Beitar's parade last night, spoiling expectations that the league leader would clinch a tie by defeating Jerusalem 3-1. Beitar looked well on its way to victory, springing to a 1-0 lead in just the eighth minute when Idan Tal took control of the ball about 30 meters from the goal. He found on the left wing Micahael Zandberg, who fired a bullet into the net.

Hapoel got its chance to equalize in the 28th minute after Beitar goalie Tvrtko Kale pushed Baruch Dego in the penalty area during a corner kick. Dego scored on the penalty kick. And the home team wasn't finished for the half. Four minutes from the break, Elin Topuzakov followed through on a corner kick with a header to complete the turnaround in fortunes.

As Beitar grew increasingly desperate to get back into the match, so did its defense become more vulnerable. The open strategy finally buried Beitar in the 71st minute, when Hapoel midfielder Dimitar Telkiyski took over the ball at the center line and then proceeded to drive down the field on an incessant march. About 20 meters from goal he suddenly stopped, set and kicked the ball like a golf chip shot that sailed in a beautiful arc right over the head of Kale. Hapoel moved up a few slots in the process.
