Revamped agro-labor policy ires Thailand
By Amiram Cohen
Tags: farmers

The Israeli government's decision to involve the International Organization for Migration, which is affiliated with the United Nations, in enlisting Thai nationals for agricultural work here has led the Prime Minister's Office to deny entry to 5,000 Thai workers since the beginning of the year - 20% of the total quota of foreign agricultural workers. Farmers are expected to bear heavy losses, possibly reaching hundreds of millions of shekels come fruit harvest time.

policy has infuriated the Thai government. Thai Labor Minister Uraiwan Thienthong told Haim Hadad, who holds the foreign workers portfolio in the Israel Farmers Federation and also serves as secretary of the Flower Growers Federation, that enlisting agricultural workers for Israel is the sole responsibility of the Thai government, and that "Israel's attempt to force UN intervention" on Thailand is "intolerable."
