Power to the people

Opening electricity bills can be frustrating: the sums seem high but the Israel Electric Corporation insists that its tariffs are too low to cover its investment needs. Wouldn't you like a mini-power station of your own? You may have one soon: National Infrastructures Minister Binyamin "Fuad" Ben-Eliezer is promoting the concept of installing mini wind-driven power production devices on household roofs, that would make electricity for the home.

Ben-Eliezer said yesterday that he had instructed the Public Utilities Authority (Electricity) to formulate rules, and tariffs, for installing such generator units on roofs within five months.

Homes that produce more power than they use can sell the surplus to the Electric Corporation.

Most small wind-turbines have a production capacity of 1-5 kilowatts. Turbines with greater capacity generally have to be at least eight meters off the ground and must have rotors of 4-5 meters in length.
