Pluristem soars 35% on strong MS trials
By Shmuel Shuster

Shares of Israeli bio-therapeutics firm Pluristem soared by 35% yesterday after the company announced that a preclinical study modeling the standard neuro-degenerative disease, multiple sclerosis (MS) showed a statistically significant improvement in functional deficiencies. The tests were of the company's PLacental eXpanded (PLX) cells.

Multiple sclerosis is an incurable condition in which the body's immunological system attacks the central nervous system, with progressive disability caused to the sufferer.

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 2.5 million persons worldwide have the disease. The market for drugs to treat the problem could total $5.4 billion.

Pluristem stock has gained 130% over the past week on Nasdaq, after the Haifa based stem cell therapy firm announced the successful completion of preclinical trials for another therapy, for stroke victims.

The trials showed improvement in the condition and behavior of mice with strokes with injection of the medication ten hours after the event.

These results constitute a breakthrough for stroke patients, who must receive currently available drugs within just three hours following the stroke.

Zami Aberman, Pluristem's president and CEO, said in a statement: "We are very excited that our PLX cells were able to demonstrate beneficial results that are statistically significant in this standardized model for Multiple Sclerosis. These results, in addition to our previously announced PLX STROKE results, demonstrate that PLX cells may be useful in the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders and potentially help millions of people. Additionally, we believe this experiment demonstrates we can potentially utilize our off-the-shelf, easy to obtain PLX cells and achieve results that are as good as or better than MSCs obtained from other more difficult to find sources."
