Petah Tikva says 'thanks' to Herzliya
By Eitan Bekerman

Maccabi Petah Tikva's prospects looked dismal yesterday as it fell to Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-1 at home. It all comes down to this: Its defense is full of holes, its midfield is disorderly, and its offense is dubious. The coaches are changed like socks, and there are barely any fans. The stadium is a hippodrome. And yet, despite it all - and let's sing in two-part harmony - "Petah Tikva shall not be relegated, Petah Tikva shall not be relegated."

The central part of the mission was obtained yesterday: Maccabi Herzliya was buried. It was wonderful timing. Next week Herzliya was supposed to be slated to host Petah Tikva and fight for its life. Now Petah Tikva can look forward to a much less pressured match and be grateful that the league's tribunal reversed the original decision to award Herzliya a technical victory - and there points - for the fiasco with Beitar Jerusalem.

The mission to eliminate Herzliya, which included the legal torture that upset the middle of a stuffed schedule, worked out well for the likes of Kfar Sava owner Eli Tabib, Ashdod SC owner Jacky Ben-Zaken and Bnei Yehuda owner Hezi Magen. They all just missed the sword hanging over them. Petah Tikva has now won a get out of the second division free card. Next week, we'll know who the real sucker is.
