Five Palestinians killed in IAF strikes on Gaza

Three Israeli air strikes and a raid in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip on Tuesday killed three Hamas militants and two Palestinian civilians, local medical workers and the Islamist group said.

Despite the violence, Israeli defense officials estimated that an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire could take effectin the coming days.

The Israel Defense Force confirmed three of the airstrikes. In the first, aircraft flying over the northeastern Gaza Strip fired at a group of Palestinians launching rockets, the army said. Gaza medical workers said the militants fled the area shortly before the airstrike took place.

Palestinian doctors said a boy, 13, was killed and another youth was seriously wounded.

In the second strike, the aircraft fired at Palestinians who were planting explosives along the fence in central Gaza, the army said. Palestinian doctors said one man, 32, was killed. His identity was not immediately known.

In another apparent IDF strike in the southern Gaza Strip, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed and two wounded in another Israeli attack, on the south side of Gaza City. The Israeli military said aircraft were in action in that area, but there were no immediate details. The army did not immediately comment.

Later on Tuesday, the IAF hit a Qassam rocket squad in the northern Gaza Strip. There were no immediate reports of Palestinian casualties in the strike.

Israel frequently launches airstrikes and brief land raids in the Gaza Strip in an effort to stop rocket fire that has killed two Israelis in the past two weeks.

During this period, the Israeli strikes have killed 14 Palestinians, including two civilians. Israel holds the Hamas militant group, which violently seized control of Gaza last June, responsible for all violence emanating from the area.
