'Other' Maccabi Tel Aviv records an important win
By David Maruani

Maccabi Tel Aviv may have been the Premier League club that most needed the break afforded it by the Israel Football Association. Coach Nir Levin was given the opportunity to inspire his team with victories by other teams named Maccabi Tel Aviv, and his players responded with a 3-1 victory over Bnei Sakhnin yesterday that put some more distance between itself - seven points - and the relegation zone.

"We were inspired by the basketball and volleyball squads and we saw it in [the players'] will and determination," said Levin. "We won honorably, but we haven't yet guaranteed that we will stay in the [Premier League; we did take a significant step."

After Lior Jan's header gave Maccabi the lead in the fourth minute, Alain Masudi (45) and Yannick Kamanan (63) also scored. Sakhnin's Mohammed Abu Ria capped the scoring in the 71st minute.

Maccabi Tel Aviv is now tied on points with Hapoel Kfar Sava, which defeated Maccabi Haifa 1-0, and Hapoel Tel Aviv, which beat Kiryat Shmona 2-0.
