No recession in high-tech investments - yet
By Guy Griml
Tags: Israel, Economy

Whatever the economic future holds in store for the rest of Israel, the high-tech sector seems to be weathering the storm very nicely so far - at least as far as raising funds for startups is concerned.

Eighty-five percent of high-tech companies raised new investments at a higher company value than in previous rounds. Of course the data only relate to the second half of 2007, according to the study from the Shiboleth law firm. Figures for this year are not yet out.

This is the highest percentage since since the surveys started at the beginning of 2003. The number of down-rounds, where the company is now worth less than in the past, was only 9% in the second half of last year.

However, all was not rosy for Israeli high-tech firms. There was a significant increase in strings attached to the money they raised, such as an increase in the number of preferential shares being given to the new investors.

The survey included 56 venture capital deals of at least $500,000 each, about half of the total.
