Nehama: Gov't is impotent to make peace
By Yuval Maoz
Tags: stocks

Shlomo Nehama believes that peace with Syria is essential, the former all-powerful chairman of Bank Hapoalim said at TheMarker Capital Markets conference yesterday. But, as he told 1,700 participants, the current government is apparently incapable of making crucial decisions.

Former leaders like Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin and Ariel Sharon had all paid heavy prices for their brave moves, Nehama added.

Investors applauded news of talks with Syria, sending Israeli stocks up 1.3%. But many economists agree with Nehama that that peace with Syria is well nigh impossible with the current government, citing the lack of support in the current Knesset and the weak coalition.

"The Saudi initiative was an opportunity that we failed to exploit," Nehama added.

On the economy, Nehama said that the Bank of Israel is undergoing trying times, and we must all get used to the idea of an environment of high inflation.
