Nablus police said Saturday that a man with the sweet tooth was in custody after telling officers he planned to kill his ex-wife and her meddling mother by lacing knaffe, a traditional confection of vermicelli, syrup and cheese, with rat poison.
Baker Basil Shantir says that while the man watched an employee making knaffe on Thursday, the worker briefly turned away from the oven and when he turned back he noticed that the cheese had turned unusually dark. The worker said the batch was spoiled and would have to be thrown out.
Suspicious sweetmakers called police when the observer hotly protested.
