With the nation's streets and highways, Acre excepted, largely quiet during Yom Kippur, Magen David Adom ambulance staff was kept busy treating 176 children hurt on bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards and other wheeled vehicles. In addition, 55 people were hurt in road accidents before the onset of the fast.

Two children were moderately hurt and other lightly injured, and a dog was killed, in a road accident at the beginning of Yom Kippur in Rishon Lezion. The cause of the accident, in which a truck "went wild," was not clear. The injured were taken to Assaf Harofe Medical Center.
Ambulances in Kiryat Motzkin, Haifa, Beersheba, Jerusalem, Holon and Rehovot were disturbed en route by youths and children; MDA pointed out that those interfering with their work were not haredim.
Criminals broke windows in the MDA station in Acre. "Harming MDA teams or MDA stations is inexcusable. We call for finding and punishing these violators as soon as possible," MDA director-general Eli Bin said.
MDA ambulances also took 120 pregnant women to hospitals to deliver their babies. One woman from Ramat Hasharon was helped to give birth at her home as she did not have time to reach the hospital.
Due to the sharp reduction in blood donations during the holiday period, MDA asks people to donate. Call 1-800-400-101 or see its Web site at www.mdais.org for information.
