MKs: Terror warnings not enough, we must block entry into Sinai

Likud MK Yuval Steinitz called Thursday for the border between Israel and Sinai to be closed during Passover in order to block the entry of Israelis into Egypt due to a number of terror alerts in the area.

Egyptian security forces on Tuesday were searching in Sinai for multiple terror cells believed to be planning attacks against foreign nationals - especially Israelis.

The Counterterrorism Bureau has issued a severe warning against visits by Israelis to Sinai during the upcoming Pesach holiday.

"Just as we close off areas of the Negev when there are kidnap alerts, the proper thing to do now is to block the entry of our citizens into Sinai until the danger has passed," Steinitz said.

National Union-NRP MK Aryeh Eldad called the Counterterrorism Bureau chief to "not only warn Isralies not to go Sinai and then have to deal with victims and hostages."

"Police should set up a roadblock north of the Taba border crossing and prevent Israelis from crossing the border," Eldad said.

Egyptian military sources told foreign reporters on Tuesday that its forces were searching for four pickup trucks thought to be carrying militants to a target site. Roadblocks were set up throughout Sinai in an effort to apprehend the cells, which are believed to be part of "World Jihad."

Meanwhile, police boosted security through out the country Wednesday, as security forces were put on high alert ahead of Passover weekend.

Thousands of policemen and civil guard volunteers were deployed to bolster security in crowded areas. Roadblocks were set up at the entrance to major cities.

The high alert will continue through out the week of Passover and until children return to school in two weeks.
