Japan watchdog probing Cerberus

Japanese regulators are examining whether U.S. private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management exploited its status as the biggest shareholder in Japan's Aozora Bank to make the bank finance its deals, the Financial Times reports. Cerberus owns 10% of Bank Leumi and means to contend a second time to buy a controlling interest in the Israeli bank.

Earlier this month, Aozora said Cerberus would pay up to $416 million to raise its stake in the Japanese bank to nearly 46%, a aonth after the midsize lender cut its earnings outlook on subprime losses.
