Israeli Arab driver critically hurt by guard at W. Bank settlement
By Nadav Shragai and Jonathan Lis, Haaretz Correspondents and Haaretz Service

A guard at a religious girls' high school in the West Bank settlement of Dolev on Thursday critically wounded an Israeli Arab driver, whom he claimed had attempted to ram through the school's gates.

According to the guard, the driver did not respond to a request that he stop and be checked. Police were investigating the incident in an effort to ascertain whether its motivations were criminal or terrorist.

The driver arrived at the institution just after 10:00 PM. The guard said that he refused to undergo a security check, and then tried to run him over. At this point, the guard shot the driver in the head. The driver was subsequently evacuated by an ambulance in which he was resuscitated, then placed in a helicopter which took him to a hospital.

A companion of the driver's who traveled with him in the car fled the scene, according to Israel Radio. A 16-year-old Bnei Brak resident had also traveled with them, who had earlier entered the car and asked to visit a friend at the school.

The school's students are girls from difficult backgrounds, taken care of and housed in the northern West Bank settlement.

Israel Radio reported that police have detained for questioning the driver, an Israel Defense Forces soldier who was with him at the time, and the teenager from Bnei Brak.
