Handball / Battle of Rishon showcases league
By Oded Na'aman

The Gan Nahum auditorium in Rishon Letzion, where city rivals Hapoel and Maccabi vied for the handball league title, was brimming with people on Monday.

Many fans could not get tickets for the fifth and final game in the five series playoff final and remained outside.

In Israeli handball, usually the team with the best goalie takes the championship and the outstanding performance of Hapoeal goalkeeper Andrei Kamishev supported that thesis.

The first half ended with Hapoel up by four goals, but Maccabi's arrogance, which previously worked against, it suddenly began to work in its favor and pushed its players to tie the match. But, of course, the game ended with the team from western Rishon overcoming its eastern rival.

Israeli handball took a step forward on Monday. Even after the hard-fought series, I am certain players from both sides could go for a drink at the end, each respectful of the other side and their craft.

To recapitulate, a word of advice to those who call the shots: Draw up long-term plans. Set game dates taking into account other sports events. Invest in the youth and in coaches, and increase the number of training sessions for the various national teams. Otherwise, next year we'll still have only two a half worthy teams in the Israeli handball league.
