Carbon confession coming to Tel Aviv
By Sarit Menahem
Tags: Brokerages, Israel

Local brokerages are going green. Or at least, IBI, Tamir Fishman, Alshuler Shaham and KCPS have joined Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an international initiative that requires public companies to tell shareholders how climatic change is influencing the long-term value of their company or corporation.

"Investors recognize that corporate engagement with climate change is an important indicator of good quality corporate management," says Paul Dickinson, director of the CDP. In the CDP project, companies are asked to measure and report greenhouse gas emissions and present their strategy for risk management and opportunities associated with climate change.

Assets managed by CDP participants increased by 30% in 2007, and the site includes information from 3,000 global firms on behalf of 385 investors, who hold assets valued at more than $57 trillion.

Sivan Sadan, V.P. Business Development at Tamir Fishman, said that joining the organization is quick and free. The main effort involved, she says, is changing habits, and the decision to give weight to environmental issues. The brokerages were enlisted at the initiative of the Ma'ala organization and Greeneye, a company that assists financial bodies in learning to weigh environmental considerations.
