Border Police troops kills Egyptian who infiltrated Israel
By The Associated Press
Tags: Egypt, Israel, Border Police

The Israel Defense Forces said that Border Police officers shot dead a man who sneaked across its desert frontier with Egypt late Wednesday night.

At the Awja crossing point in central Sinai on Thursday the Israelis handed over to the Egyptian authorities the body of the man, named as Ayesh Suleiman Moussa, 32.

Officers apparently opened fire on a group of infiltrators who entered the country through the northern part of Israel's border with Sinai.

An Egyptian security official says the dead man was a drug smuggler and a second man with him was moderately wounded. The rest of the infiltrators - roughtly five in total - escaped back to Egypt.

An IDF spokeswoman said she had no information on a second person and could not give the exact location of Wednesday night's incident.

Palestinian militants and African migrant workers often try to slip across Israel's porous border with Egypt.

But security officials said they did not believe the infiltrators were African refugees seeking shelter in Israel, and that the officers suspected they intended to harm soldiers. IDF forces and Border Police officers conducted searches along the border in search for answers as to the motive of the infilgration.
