Beitar tries to keep reign on fans ahead of today's match
By Matan Krakov

Beitar Jerusalem players were in high spirits yesterday ahead of today's league encounter with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Captain David Amsalem gathered the players for a meeting and suggested that the vouchers traditionally given by employers for Passover next month be donated to needy families. His proposal received the immediate support of a majority of the players and after some persuading, the rest were eventually won over. Chairman Eli Arazi, who sat in on the meeting, complimented the players and told them he was proud of them.

Later, coach Itzhak Shum tried to motivate his players in a speech. "Don't forget that in the last two matches against them this year, Maccabi [Tel Aviv] made things difficult for us," Shum said. "Don't treat Maccabi as a bottom table club because they have lots of talents that can surprise us."

Beitar's Chilean defender Cristian Alvarez, who is suffering from pains in his right leg, will be rested so he can play in Wednesday's State Cup match. Veteran defender David Amsalem will fill his spot. Also, Michael Zandberg may return to the starting lineup after recovering from an injury.

Meanwhile, Beitar management held talks with leaders of its supporters, asking their assistance to prevent crowds from entering the pitch to celebrate the clubs' imminent winning of the championship. Officials said such celebrations would risk human life and wished to avoid similar scenes from last year's championship win when supporters burst onto the pitch.

Beitar fans on Friday ran onto the pitch in a similar fashion at the end of the club's youth team victory over municipal rival Hapoel in the youth State Cup. Several Beitar officials were present at the time, prompting the decision to hold talks on the issue with the club's fan base.
