Beitar takes it home with 3-2 thriller
By Haaretz Sports Staff

Beitar Jerusalem took another step toward winning the double after narrowly defeating Hapoel Kfar Sava 3-2 in the State Cup quarterfinals at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem. Some 8,000 spectators watched Beitar take the lead in the very first minute when Romulo broke free of the Kfar Sava defense, then made a cross pass, connecting with Amit Ben-Shushan, who put the ball in the back of the net.

Beitar pushed on, and in the 26th minute Ben-Shushan scored again, this time after he was passed the ball from Aviram Baruchyan. Kfar Sava, however, did not give up. Its players continued to try and score, and in the 73rd minute succeeded when Costa Rican striker Bill Gonzalez headed in the ball after a corner kick. Then, only three minutes later, veteran defender Ofer Talker sent a thundering shot from 20 meters to the top corner of Beitar's goal, leaving the goalie no chance, making it 2-2.

But in the 84th minute, a set-piece pass from Baruchyan to Yoav Ziv allowed the latter to shoot on goal, making it 3-2 to Beitar. Kfar Sava almost scored in stoppage time when Avihai Yadin sent a wonderful shot on goal that Beitar goalkeeper Tvrto Kale only just pushed past the post. At the match's conclusion, Kfar Sava coach and former Beitar legend Eli Ohana said: "I feel disappointed. I had a real feeling we'd surprise everyone."
