Basketball / Upper Nazareth secures spot
By Arie Livnat

Upper Nazareth defeated Givat Shmuel 85-70 yesterday on the final day of the basketball National League (Liga Leumit) to clinch the eighth and final spot in the playoffs. Upper Nazareth will meet Givat Shmuel again in the quarterfinals, but it will have a much more difficult time: Givat Shmuel coach Oren Aharoni yesterday allowed himself to give more playing time to his younger players.

Hapoel Be'er Sheva lost to Maccabi Ashdod 111-101, and fell to eighth place and a quarterfinal matchup against first-place Elitzur Netanya. Netanya picked up its fourth loss in its past five games, 97-92 in overtime at Beitar Binyamina.

Maccabi Haifa was defeated by Hod Hasharon 74-66, but benefited from Elitzur Yavneh's 80-79 loss to Kiryat Ata. Haifa earned home-court advantage in its upcoming quarterfinal series against Yavneh.

Yokne'am/Megiddo came back from a double-digit deficit to record a 94-89 victory at home over Elitzur Ramle, lining up a quarterfinal matchup against Kiryat Ata.

Also last night, Hapoel Lev Hasharon defeated Maccabi Shoham 118-82.

The quarterfinals begin on Monday.
