Basketball / Euroleague / Maccabi Tel Aviv faces a must-win
By Vered Cohen

This time it is possible to say that Maccabi Tel Aviv's Euroleague game tonight is crucial. After the embarrassing display last week against Zalgiris, Maccabi hosts Real Madrid and another loss could be critical in the battle to advance out of Group F to the next stage.

Nikola Vujcic will be back tonight, but his level of fitness is unknown.

"Unless every player works hard to get rebounds, we will not win games," said coach Zvika Sherf to his players this week. "There is a lot of pressure, but these are the types of games we work for. This is Maccabi's soul."

Sherf was not using the injuries to Marcus Fizer and Vujcic as an excuse for anything.

"We have gone back to work on fundamentals," he said. "It is the only solution that I know. It is impossible to have 15 exercises in one day and change them. There is not button to press."

And what about Real Madrid, which will host the Euroleague's Final Four this year?

"It is a big club," Sherf said, "that in the past Maccabi Tel Aviv tried to emulate. In the last two years, they have returned to the top."

In addition the club's centers being injured, Maccabi does not have any backup for its weak guards.

"I am playing poorly, and I don't know why," said Vonteego Cummings ahead of the game, expressing disappointment at himself, while also being comforted by the fact that, "at least we are winning. I hope that the game against Real Madrid will be when I get the confidence and break out."
