Basketball / Euroleague / Mac. T.A. gears up for series against Barcelona
By Haaretz Sports Staff

Maccabi Tel Aviv will face Barcelona tonight at Tel Aviv's Nokia Auditorium in the first game of a best-of-three series to determine who advances to the Euroleague semifinal. Tel Aviv will also host the third encounter, should one be needed.

At a press conference, Maccabi coach Zvika Sherf said he was confident in his team's abilities.

"We're in good shape, ready and prepared," Sherf said. "We've done all the necessary preparations, but tensions are still high." During practice, Sherf has emphasized the importance of keeping Barcelona star player Jaka Lakovic at bay. "Lakovic is the key, but he isn't the only player in Barcelona," Sherf said.

Today's match will also mark the return of Maccabi's Tal Burstein to fitness after being sidelined for a couple of months due to injury. Barcelona coach Xavier Pascual also spoke at the press conference after the team arrived in Israel yesterday.

"I'd like to thank everyone who came," Pascual said. "It's going to be an interesting quarterfinal. When Maccabi and Barcelona meet, it's like the finals."

Earlier, Maccabi Tel Aviv held its last practice before the match. Maccabi veteran guard and defensive legend Derrick Sharp, who may be assigned to Lakovic, talked about his expectations from the game.

"All year long is money time for us," Sharp said. "You work hard all year to reach the best situation and we reached this point knowing what mentality to have. We were close last year, but this year we're going to fight to the end."
