Barak: If Gaza calm continues, we'll mull easing border control
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Monday that if the relative calm continues in the Gaza Strip, and militants there cease firing rockets, Israel will consider easing control of the border crossings to include cooperation with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad's government.

The remarks, made during Barak's meeting his visiting Czech counterpart, Vlasta Parkanova, represent a shift in Israeli policy toward the Gaza border crossings.

Until now, Israel has opposed the requests of both the Americans and the Europeans to respond to Fayyad's plan to hand over control of the crossing to the Palestinian Authority.

Fayyad had reasoned the giving the PA control of the crossings would allow for an ease on conditions for the Palestinian people in Gaza. Fayyad also said that such a transfer could also strengthen the moderate elements in the Palestinian Authority and present a first step toward returning Gaza to PA control.
