Ashkelon tops Jerusalem 89-76 as Massie shines
By Haaretz Sports Staff

Ironi Ashkelon beat Hapoel Jerusalem in a hard-fought game, 89-76, after a strong fourth quarter. Ironi Ashkelon's Chris Massie led his team in points and rebounds, while for Jerusalem Guy Pniny managed some key three pointers.

Both teams stayed close throughout the contest with the score tied at 57 at the end of the third quarter. With eight minutes to go in the fourth, tensions flared after a scuffle between Pniny and Ironi's Steve Burtt ended with Pniny being flagrantly fouled.

The referee had to calm Ironi's Cory Carr, who felt the foul was unjustified, telling him "if you score, you'll win, and that's it." Still, Burtt was not satisfied, and a minute later he flagrantly fouled Pniny again. Burtt was ejected from the game.

But two minutes later a flagrant foul was called against Pniny, who fouled an Ironi player out of frustration after having lost the ball. From that point, Ironi held on to the lead. Jerusalem's players, growing increasingly desperate, fouled their rivals repeatedly to stop the clock. Jerusalem managed to create some confusion among the Ironi players, but the locals were collected enough to hang on to their lead.

Burtt was so pleased after the game that he danced in front of the cameras, ran over to the stands and high-fived fans.

"We haven't been playing good basketball in recent weeks," Hapoel Jerusalem Coach Dan Shamir said.
